Not getting the grade you hoped for is disappointing and stressful. However, a low grade does not reflect you, your work ethic, or your intelligence. Mistakes happen, and there are so many factors at play including stress, work, other classes, your personal life, and more.
When planning your next step, remember
College is different, and so are different classes
- College is not the same as high school. The effort needed and strategies necessary to succeed will be different, and it may take some learning to get used to.
- Courses vary in difficulty; the effort needed and strategies necessary from class to class can be different. It takes time to adjust to college.
- Getting straight A’s in college is not the standard. Most people don’t.
- In college, there often is less one on one attention given to each student so your needs are not as closely assessed as you might like sometimes. To address this, you have to take initiative and speak to instructors and tutors outside of class.
Try some reflection
- How did you study? What worked for you? What can you change?
- What happened during this test? Did you feel anxious? Consider trying a relaxation technique next time.
- How prepared were you for the exam? Using your returned exam to analyze errors and to help prepare for the next exam can be helpful.
- What topics did you not understand? Did you spend the most amount of study time on subjects that you were least familiar with? Consider looking at options to improve your comprehension, concentration, and memory.
